Emergency Procedures

Be prepared in the event of an unexpected emergency.

Evacuation

  • Calmly and quietly walk to the nearest exit.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Follow instructions of staff and emergency personnel.
  • Evacuate to the designated evacuation area—at least 150 feet away from the building.
  • Keep all roadways and walkways to and from the building clear for emergency personnel.
  • Return to the building ONLY when instructed to by staff or emergency personnel.

Fire

  • If it is safe to do so, activate the closest fire alarm (fire pull station).
  • Calmly and quietly walk to the nearest exit.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Evacuate to the designated evacuation area—at least 150 feet away from the building.
  • Dial 5 or ext. 3507 from a campus phone or any emergency call box , or call 516.877.3511 from any phone and report the location and nature of the fire.
  • Keep all roadways and walkways to and from the building clear for emergency personnel.
  • Follow instructions of staff and emergency personnel.
  • Return to the building ONLY when instructed to by staff or emergency personnel.

Power Failure

  • Follow instructions of staff and emergency personnel.
  • Evacuate to the designated evacuation area if necessary—at least 150 feet away from the building.
  • Dial 5 or ext. 3507 from a campus phone or any emergency call box , or call 516.877.3511 from any phone and report the location of the power failure.
  • If trapped in an elevator or dark area, stay put, remain calm, and call for help.
  • If evacuated, return to the building ONLY when instructed to by staff or emergency personnel.

Flood

  • Do not enter any flooded area, i.e., basement, first floor, vaulted area, etc.
  • Dial 5 or ext. 3507 from a campus phone or any emergency call box , or call 516.877.3511 from any phone and report the location and nature of the flood.
  • Minor flooding: Call Facilities at 516.877.3970 and report the location and nature of leak.

Medical Emergency

  • Dial 5 or ext. 3507 from a campus phone or any emergency call box , or call 516.877.3511 from any phone and report the nature of the medical emergency and the location. If you can, do not leave the victim, direct someone else to call instead.
  • If there is no immediate danger to you, stay with the victim and keep them calm until help arrives.
  • Do not touch the victim and do not attempt to move or encourage the victim to move.

Tornado Warning

  • Take cover at the lowest level of the building and to interior rooms or hallways—e.g., in the UC lower level, the Fireplace Lounge, Bookstore, bathrooms.
  • If available, get under a sturdy object, such as a desk or staircase.
  • Avoid places with wide-span roofs such as the atrium, cafeteria, or large hallways.
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Do not open windows.
  • Dial 5 or ext. 3507 from a campus phone or any emergency call box , or call 516.877.3511 from any phone and report injuries and damage.
  • After the all clear, if the building is damaged, evacuate immediately and do not return to the building unless instructed to by staff or emergency personnel.
  • Remain alert for signs of additional tornadoes.

Bomb Threat/Suspicious Packages

  • Do not touch a suspicious package.
  • Evacuate the building—do not pull the fire alarm.
  • Do not use a radio or cell phone near a bomb threat area.
  • Dial 5 or ext. 3507 from a campus phone or any emergency call box , or call 516.877.3511 from any phone and report the threat or location of the suspicious package.
